Overview

It Started With an Idea

The Creative Room is a student-led design community I co-founded with three classmates at BCIT. We wanted to create more than a club, we wanted a space where students and alumni could connect, collaborate, and grow through workshops, creative projects, and real-world experiences.
As one of the founding designers, I helped shape the club's visual identity, including the branding, logo, typography, and overall creative direction.

Problem

Where Are the Designers?

As we attended design events at other universities, one thing stood out—every school had a recognizable design community, while BCIT didn't. We saw an opportunity to create a space that students and alumni could proudly belong to.

Designing for Growth

Designing
for Growth

Build a flexible identity that could grow with the community.

Process

Defining the Brand

We identified who we were designing for and the values we wanted the community to represent.

Finding the Visual Direction

Mood boards helped us explore a visual language that felt authentic, expressive, and intentionally unfinished.

Naming & Logo Exploration

Inspired by the space where BCIT design students spent countless hours creating, The Creative Room became the foundation of our identity. We explored multiple logo concepts before landing on a textured mark that captured the community's creative energy.

Giving the Brand a Voice

With the logo in place, I created a custom typeface and colour system that made the brand feel unmistakably ours.

Solution

A cohesive, scalable design system.

The final identity reflects the spirit of an open creative workspace rather than a traditional student club.

The visual system combines hand-drawn textures, expressive typography, and a flexible colour palette inspired by BCIT's blue and yellow, supported by vibrant secondary colours. Together, these elements create a brand that feels approachable, energetic, and made by designers for designers.

THe OUTCOME: SOFT OPENING

Our first meet up had a turnout with 16 members, sparking conversation

The Creative Room launched with a distinctive identity that students could immediately recognize and connect with. The branding established a foundation for future workshops, events, social media, merchandise, and community initiatives while helping define a culture centered around collaboration and creative growth.

Reflection: BRANDING FROM THE GROUND UP

Community Shapes Identity

A strong brand reflects the people behind it, not just a visual style.

Design for Longevity

Flexible systems make it easier for a brand to grow without losing consistency.
