Overview

Designing for a Non-for-Profit

SNIWWOC is a Canadian nonprofit supporting Indigenous women, women of colour, Two-Spirit, and non-binary communities through reproductive justice, education, and healthcare resources.

As the team's sole designer, I redesigned their website while creating weekly social media content that aligned with their existing brand.

Problem

An Outdated Website Limited Access to Community Resources

While designing weekly social media content, I recognized an opportunity to improve the website experience. Through a redesign, I aimed to make information easier to navigate while staying true to SNIWWOC's mission and existing brand.

Opportunity Areas…

To bring this vision to life, I focused on creating a brand identity that would make the community recognizable, welcoming, and memorable.

Improve Navigation

Bringing the
Brand to Life

Help users find programs, services, and resources more quickly.

Clarify Content

Capturing
Our Personality

Create a clear information hierarchy that makes content easier to scan and understand.

Reflect the Mission

Designing
for Growth

Design a welcoming digital experience that better represents SNIWWOC's values and community.

Process

01 · Understanding the Experience

I audited the existing website to identify usability issues and uncover opportunities for improvement.

02 · Learning from Others

I researched (nonprofit) websites to understand effective layouts, navigation patterns, and accessibility best practices.

03 · Exploring Solutions

Using my findings, I sketched and iterated on layouts that improved content hierarchy while staying true to SNIWWOC's brand.

04 · Refining the Design

After gathering feedback, I refined the final interface to create a clearer, more welcoming experience.

Solution

A Website Built for Community

A website that made information easier to find while staying true to SNIWWOC's existing brand. Through ongoing collaboration and feedback with my managers, each iteration was refined to better support the organization's goals and community.

Reflection: Designing for a non-for-profit

Advocate for Better UX

Presenting a usability audit helped stakeholders understand design opportunities before jumping into solutions.

A strong brand reflects the people behind
it, not just a visual
style.

Communicate Clearly

Working with a remote, non-design team strengthened my ability to explain design
decisions in an accessible way.

Design with Purpose

Good nonprofit design prioritizes access over aesthetics.
