Overview

Safe Spaces. Stronger Workplaces.

SafeSpace is an app designed to help women and gender-diverse workers in trades safely document workplace harm, access support, and build awareness. Using AI, the platform transforms anonymous reports into clear insights and actionable steps to improve job site safety.

Problem

Harassment Exists — But Reporting Feels Unsafe

Nearly 1 in 2 tradespeople experience workplace harassment—most often going unreported due to fear, risk, or lack of support.

Workers face microaggressions, isolation, and fear of retaliation—leaving many experiences undocumented and change out of reach.

Research

Through surveys and interviews, we uncovered key patterns:

66.7%

voiced that they feel isolated due to their gender.

62.5%

believe that peer support would help manage their mental health onsite.

75%

believe that peer support would help manage their mental health onsite.

Opportunity Areas…

Defining the Experience

Using user personas to stay grounded in real experiences, we mapped flows and structure to support quick, discreet actions in high-stress worksite conditions.

User Flow

Designing the System

Low-fidelity wireframes validated usability and flow before moving into a calm, minimal interface designed to feel safe and non-intimidating.

Testing & Iteration

Refinement Through Testing

To validate SafeSpace in real-world conditions, we tested usability in high-pressure scenarios.

What we improved...

Easy access to Recording And Reporting

Recordings initially felt disconnected from the reporting process. We introduced a post-recording modal.

Simplified Reporting Flow

We simplified the reporting flow to make it faster and easier to complete in high-pressure situations.

Clear Recording vs. Reporting

We clarified the distinction between recording and reporting, creating more intuitive and clearly defined actions.

Guided Next Steps

We introduced recommended actions to provide clear, supportive follow-up in real-world scenarios.

Solution

A Safe, Discreet Reporting Ecosystem

SafeSpace is a connected system designed for both workers and leadership. Every interaction is designed to be quick, private, and supportive, even in high-pressure environments.

The Outcome

SpaceSpace’s Impact

On December 5th, 2026, Team SafeSpace presented the app at the annual Digital Design and Development (D3) and Full-Stack Web Development (FSWD) Student Design & Technology Showcase, sharing our work with industry leaders, government officials, and the broader community.

Reflection: Designing With Responsibility

Design Requires Perspective

Stepping away from the work led to clearer, stronger decisions.

Collaboration Strengthens Outcomes

Inviting input from teammates and mentors improved both the process and result.

Feedback Drives Impact

Continuous testing ensured the solution stayed grounded in real user needs.

SafeSpace’s FIrst Pitch

SafeSpace grew from a small idea into a fully realized product through research, iteration, and a shared commitment to creating safer workplaces. Leading the design of this project deepened my understanding of how thoughtful, intentional design can support and protect communities.
